Animal ID: 17-07-17-99593Darby (female)

Lab    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Heartworm Positive

This gorgeous, 2-year-old black lab is DARBY. Although she's technically an adult, Darby still has a bit of puppy in her. She's energetic, playful and a bit mischievous, but affectionate and gentle, as well. For those who aren't familiar with Labrador retrievers, they're one of the most popular breeds in the U.S. because their good dispositions and loyalty to their humans make them such wonderful family dogs and companions. Darby is no exception; she's ready to return all the love her adopters can give her. This great gal is crate- and leash-trained and seems to be house-trained. Darby had a thorough vet exam and got a good health report, ... (Read More)but she did test positive for heartworms. Because she doesn't have any clinical signs, we decided on the 'slow kill' method of heartworm treatment, which is not as risky as the immiticide injections and doesn't require strict crate confinement. She has had 30 days of doxycycline; now she just gets monthly doses of heartworm prevention, like any other dog. For more about heartworm treatments, including the slow kill method, visit www.dogaware.com/articles/wdjheartwormtreatment.html. You can apply for Darby online at www.savethestrays.org or email info@savethestrays.org for our application. Adoption fee $225. (Less)

Animal ID: 17-07-08-00333Chester (male)

Black and Tan Coonhound Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Female Dogs Only, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

If you love hounds, you'll love CHESTER. This 1-year-old black and tan coonhound mix loves to run and sniff around the exercise areas here at Save the Strays. But, like most hounds, he's quite happy lounging indoors, as well. Also like most hounds, he's food-driven. Show him a treat and he'll try his best to do what you want, once he understands what that is. He learned to sit in 5 minutes using treats. That's also how we trained him to kennel up in his crate when he comes inside. He's pretty smart, so if you get a bag of treats and devote an afternoon, you can probably teach him most of the basic commands. Chester is large (58 lbs.) and ... (Read More)fairly active, so he needs room to run. A fenced yard would be best, but he can be taught better leash manners if you want to walk him. Because of his size and energy level, we think he would be best with adults only or a family with older, bigger children so he doesn't knock them down when he's playing. He's also best as an only dog or with other large females. Apply for Chester online at www.savethestrays.org or email info@savethestrays.org for our application. Adoption fee $225. (Less)

Animal ID: 17-07-08-00287Keebler (male)

Pekingese    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Meet KEEBLER, a 5 to 6-year-old Pekingese. If you know pekes, you know they can be confident, lively, playful and independent (sometimes stubborn), yet incredibly sensitive, as well as loyal and affectionate if treated well. This is not a dog for children; Keebler will not tolerate rough handling and doesn't respond well to scolding. But get out a biscuit and he'll do just about anything you want him to do. Keebler loves toys and plays well with other small dogs, as long as they don't try to dominate him. He doesn't like bigger dogs. If you appreciate a dog who thrives on mutual respect, this little elf may be the dog for you. Keebler can go ... (Read More)home after he is neutered on July 25. Apply for him online at www.savethestrays.org or email info@savethestrays.org for our application. Adoption fee: $225. (Less)

Animal ID: 17-07-07-00428Bruce (male)

Dutch Shepherd Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

We rescued BRUCE from the euthanasia room at a Texas shelter - and, boy, are we glad we did. This Dutch shepherd mix is a gem! Just a year old, Bruce learned to sit within five minutes. We bet you could have him trained to do all kinds of commands in no time! Bruce is friendly to everybody and loves playing with toys and other dogs. He's crate-trained and seems to be house trained and rides well in the car. Bruce is in great health, up to date on vaccinations and neutered. All he needs now is someone to adopt him. If you would like to that person or family, apply for Bruce online at www.savethestrays.org or email info@savethestrays.org for ... (Read More)our application. Adoption fee $225. (Less)

Animal ID: 16-04-30-00170Snickers (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

SNICKERS is a 4-year-old chocolate lab mix who simply melts when she gets some attention (like a good belly rub). She loves playing with toys - especially if they have squeakers - as well as fetching (and sometimes destroying) balls. She gets along with most other dogs her size if they're not aggressive toward her, but is not a good fit for a home with small animals. Snickers is the kind of dog who would enjoy a walk with her adopter, but doesn't need constant activity. She's also happy just to hang out with you. Wouldn't someone out there like to hang out with her? Apply for Snickers online at www.savethestrays.org or email ... (Read More)info@savethestrays.org for an application. Adoption fee $225. (Less)

Animal ID: 15-08-14-00624Turbo (male)

Miniature Pinscher Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Turbo is an older min-pin mix who still has lots of life in him and enjoys walks and loves to ride in the car. He's also content to sunbathe outside for a while or nap on the couch. He enjoys a bit of attention (petting, ear scratches, gentle holding), but isn't demanding of your time. Turbo had some bad experiences with children before coming to our rescue, so he needs a quiet home with adults only. Apply using the online application at www.savethestrays.org if you would like to give this little guy a loving home. Or email info@savethestrays.org if you have questions. Turbo's adoption fee is just $75.
