JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS! Looking for a great family dog? Meet JANE! But she's well past the puppy stage, so she has good house manners. Jane is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and tested negative for heartworms. Her adoption fee is $225. Wouldn't you like to take her home for the holidays? Apply online at www.savethestrays.org or email info@savethestrays.org for our application.

Animal ID: 17-07-17-99593Darby (female)

Lab    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Heartworm Positive

This gorgeous, 2-year-old black lab is DARBY. Although she's technically an adult, Darby still has a bit of puppy in her. She's energetic, playful and a bit mischievous, but affectionate and gentle, as well. For those who aren't familiar with Labrador retrievers, they're one of the most popular breeds in the U.S. because their good dispositions and loyalty to their humans make them such wonderful family dogs and companions. Darby is no exception; she's ready to return all the love her adopters can give her. This great gal is crate- and leash-trained and seems to be house-trained. Darby had a thorough vet exam and got a good health report, ... (Read More)but she did test positive for heartworms. Because she doesn't have any clinical signs, we decided on the 'slow kill' method of heartworm treatment, which is not as risky as the immiticide injections and doesn't require strict crate confinement. She has had 30 days of doxycycline; now she just gets monthly doses of heartworm prevention, like any other dog. For more about heartworm treatments, including the slow kill method, visit www.dogaware.com/articles/wdjheartwormtreatment.html. You can apply for Darby online at www.savethestrays.org or email info@savethestrays.org for our application. Adoption fee $225. (Less)

Animal ID: 17-07-08-00333Chester (male)

Black and Tan Coonhound Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Female Dogs Only, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

If you love hounds, you'll love CHESTER. This 1-year-old black and tan coonhound mix loves to run and sniff around the exercise areas here at Save the Strays. But, like most hounds, he's quite happy lounging indoors, as well. Also like most hounds, he's food-driven. Show him a treat and he'll try his best to do what you want, once he understands what that is. He learned to sit in 5 minutes using treats. That's also how we trained him to kennel up in his crate when he comes inside. He's pretty smart, so if you get a bag of treats and devote an afternoon, you can probably teach him most of the basic commands. Chester is large (58 lbs.) and ... (Read More)fairly active, so he needs room to run. A fenced yard would be best, but he can be walked on leash (needs a little work). Because of his size and enthusiasm, we think he would be best with adults only or a family with older, bigger children so he doesn't knock them down when he greets them. As for other dogs, he seems to prefer females, although a male that doesn't act aggressive or challenge him may be okay. Apply for Chester online at www.savethestrays.org or email info@savethestrays.org for our application. Adoption fee $225. (Less)
